Biotech Companies Invest Microfluidic Device Development for Pathogen Detection

Emerging COVID-19 variant s  have encouraged many biotech giants to actively participate in developing microfluidic devices for rapid and accurate SARS-CoV-2 detection.   Though the current global wave of the omicron COVID-19 variant is relatively mild in terms of causing severe disease and death, it's necessary to continuously develop new technologies and strategies to identify and resist COVID-19 infection in case more aggressive variants may  come around from nowhere. Microfluidics, a highly miniaturized, automatic, and integrated technology, is   expecte d to perform rapid, low-cost, accurate, and point-of-care detection of infectious diseases like COVID-19. Researchers from leading life science companies like Creative Biolabs have gotten involved in developing and designing microfluidic devices for different applications, including devices for quick and accurate SARS-CoV-2 detection.   Microfluidic Chips for Pathogen Detection   Infectious disea...

How Microfluidic Devices Help Extraction and Purification of DNA Fragments for Cancer Diagnosis?

A precise diagnosis has been taken as one of the initial conditions for efficiently treating cancer, for which a technique called biopsy that used to remove a piece of solid tissue or a sample of cells for laboratory testing. Though traditional tumor biopsies can informatively identify diseases when   patients are experiencing certain signs and symptoms in an area of concern, they are not satisfying enough due to their  invasive nature, which could pose the risk of bleeding and infection to patients . Alternatively, the recent fluid biopsy technique combined with microfluidics can detect disease through blood or other body fluids rather than solid tissue, which increasingly receives attention in terms of its non-invasiveness and simplicity.   DNA Fragments for Cancer Diagnosis   The primary target of a liquid biopsy in cancer diagnosis is molecular markers known as cell-free DNA (cfDNA). cfDNA includes all non-encapsulated DNA, and these nucleic acid fragments...

Lab-on-a-chip Technology: Detect Cancer Before a Tumor Formed

Cancer is a condition characterized by uncontrollable cell growth or reproduction in a specific part of the body, which will ultimately invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant sites. Most of the time, cancer has been advanced and possibly spread throughout the body by the time it's diagnosed. Therefore, cancer diagnosis and treatment is a competition against time, for which efforts have been made to find informative biomarkers, such as mutated nucleic acids, secreted proteins, and tumor cells, that can indicate cancer at the relatively early stage.   Researchers at the Concordia University recently published a study in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics , which introduced a new liquid biopsy approach using lab-on-a-chip  technology, aiming at detecting cancer prior to the forming of a tumor.   M icrofluidic Chip to  Capture Cancer Biomarkers   Th is liquid biopsy method is developed on the basis of a microfluidic chip targeting extrac...
